Reagan Beanie Pattern – Classic Worsted Weight Knit Beanie

A week before I was scheduled for induction with my first baby, I realized I didn’t have a hat for her that I thought would be small enough. I had newborn things but my girl was measuring teeny tiny (she was born at 5lb, 3 oz) and I didn’t know if I’d have something to fit her! In full nesting mode, I set to work designing a double brim, classic-looking beanie. A few days later, Reagan was born! This hat has worked well for her (and now my second daughter) as a newborn hat, toddler, and both my husband and I have worn it in the adult size.

This worsted weight beanie can be made either single or double brim and features a classic cabled pattern with a slight twist.

After Reagan was born, the first pediatrician that came into check on her in the hospital commented on how dainty it looked on her and remarked on the yarn weight and immediately I asked her “wait, are you a knitter??” so we chatted about local yarn shops in Fort Collins (My Sister Knits and The Loopy Ewe) and what we like to make.

Did I choose my baby’s pediatrician based on the fact that she was a knitter? Maybe. (But also she was really nice and it helped that we had the same first names.)

These have since become my go-to hat for newborns, it can be made in any color so it’s great as a handmade gift for both baby boys and baby girls! (Plus you can go for the mommy-and-me look and make one for mom too, which is always a winner with new moms.)
