Top 8 Cozy Knit Ornament Patterns for Your Holiday Tree

cute knit ornaments diy patterns

There’s just something about handmade, vintage looking ornaments. It reminds me of childhood, the Christmas scenes from Lady & the Tramp, and just general nostalgia.

While we’re not quite yet decorating for Christmas as we continue to work on unpacking (will we ever be done?), the tree is waiting in the hall and I have so many knit ornaments for it it. Probably too many, actually.

DIY Ornaments make great handmade add-on gifts, often sell well at markets, or just add charm to your tree! Bonus – their small size means that they are GREAT stash busters or leftover yarn users. Such a good way to add more inventory for little or no extra spend upfront aside from the pattern cost.

1. Amy Gaines Winter Animals

These adorable animals were a HIT at the Christmas market I attended a few years back, and a number of coworkers purchased them as well!

These ornaments use size 3 (US) needles and size 4 worsted/aran weight yarn. They make great stash busters as well!

2. Amy Gaines Dogs

Another great one by Amy Gaines, I have a feeling that these pups would also be a hit, either at a market, or for a friend or family member if you made one to match their furry companion.

It’s actually taking so much self control to not just buy the pattern and start making them…but I have a market in 2 weeks and need to FOCUS.

Yarn used is the same as the one above, worsted, with size 3 US knitting needles.

3. Easy Christmas Sweater by Yarn in Thyme

This adorable mini sweater pattern by Yarn in Thyme could be endlessly customized, especially if you utilize the Yarn Doodles by Pacific Knit Co. The combinations are rolling through my mind already.

This pattern utilizes only 33 yards of DK knit yarn – another great stashbuster for that leftover sweater yarn that’s been sitting in your closet for four years.

4. Big Pom Beanie Ornament by DriftKnitwear

If you’re not a fan of tiny yarn, there’s still options for Christmas ornaments! I love this idea to use the scraps of your fancy yarn that can’t really be used for much else… what better way to use your Malabrigo Rasta?

These could also be placed on top of a wine bottle for a festive holiday beverage or hostess gift!

Mmkay I’ve convinced myself. I could whip out like a dozen in an evening. *Adds to cart*

5. Gnome Ornaments by handmadebyesqu

GNOMES. I’m still crocheting them and every.single.time I’m working on one or someone sees a finished one they’re always twitterpated.

And I mean, while I’m not fully on board with the gnome life myself, there is something so deliciously cute about a gnome on a tree…and given that they’re popular right now I feel like they’ll sell like hotcakes.

Worsted weight yarn, size 7 needles, and affordable pattern price? It’ll be on my needles next year.

6. Tiny Socks by summer.lee.knits

Tiny socks – and free?! I reached out to my bud Laurel from @alabasterpurl and she sent over some of her favorite ideas as well and this one is soooo cute.

I’ve seen Summer’s designs in passing but never realized that she’s an absolute sock QUEEN. I ended up on her youtube page and it’s full of tips, tricks, and great design so I will be returning once this busy season is over. (This, my friends, is why you ask for recommendations!)

7. Ball.ble by lilykatemakes

Apparently I’m ALL FOR the minis this season because seriously, HOW CUTE?!?

Another pick from Laurel, this is another great stashbuster and a great little gift for other fiber-loving friends (for both knit and crochet!). I love all these ideas for the extra fingering knit yarn laying around. Lily Kate, you did good with this one!

8. Knit Little Frosty Snowman by LittleTotzDesigns

Rosy cheeks, a pom hat, and a sweater make for a sweet little snowman!

DK weight yarn, 2.75MM needles, and a bit of time are all you need to have a little snowman army, ready to spread Christmas cheer.

Are there any I forgot? Share your favorite ornament patterns below!

Happy holidays, may you stay warm and cozy!
