Right before the beginning of the year I found out about the crochet book blanket, and I was immediately intrigued. I’ve always seen other makers who did temperature blankets or mood blankets but was never all that into it. Recording the weather? In a straight line? For me, that wasn’t interesting enough so I never got into it.
But a crochet book blanket? Combining literary arts and taking each cover’s colors to make a representation? I could get into that. It was fun to see how others interpreted books that I had read and to see their finished projects! I gleefully joined the Facebook Group.
But while I was excited to get started, it took me a bit to get started with the actual crochet part of the blanket as I wasn’t sure what pattern to use…I wanted it to be big enough that I could add multiple colors and not so big that I’d get bored.
After lurking in the Facebook Group a bit, I found inspiration, and on Etsy I found a pattern collection that would mean lots of pattern options that all fit together! In my searching I found a number of great options, so if you are still looking for patterns yourself, read on.
Granny Square Crochet Pattern Collections and Basics
Interchangeable Crochet Book Blanket Squares:
VVCAL Crochet Blanket Mega-Pack by Cypress Textiles on Etsy
This is the package that I got and so far I’ve been pleased with them! These are all squares that leave you with 80 stitches on the outter edge of each. I liked that some were named for cities – it was fun to make an Irish one in the pattern “Dublin” and still use the colors that were on the cover. Also helpful is the Youtube playlist where she walks you through how to make each one.

Hexigons
Also by Cypress Textiles, the 2022/2204 VVCAL boasts 72 hexigons and multiple joins! I’m already eyeing it for next year.

A Bunch for a Little
This collection from Crochetphoria Pattern is less than $4 for 365 squares! From the photos it appears that the bundle is a mix of both 2D and 3D kinds of squares.

For the New to Crochet
By EditaArtsandCrafts, this singular granny square pattern is a cheap, very basic granny square pattern with photo tutorials. I’ve seen crafters make their entire blankets out of something like this and I was definitely tempted to do the same!

Genre-Specific Ideas
For Those Who Read * A Lot * of True Crime
If you’re the type to wear your love of true crime novels on your sleeve blanket, this is a creative skull square!

Fantasy
Fantasy seems to be having a moment, and these are all fun ideas as you power your way through the multi-book series!

History
Maybe it’s all the historical dramas I’ve been watching on Starz, but when I saw this pattern by HappilyPatternsShop, it immediately reminded me of the Tudor Rose.

Flower Lovers
There’s something about a flower foward granny square, and these African Flower Squares by LadyBugKnitArt have groovy flair that could be turned into an awesome book afghan!

Daisies Everywhere – This pattern by HappilyPatternsShop on Etsy could be switched out for different colors, but would leave the maker with a set of multicolored sunflowers.

Geometric Vibes
Some of us like clean lines, and that’s okay too! If you run less on the chaotic side of life, this pattern could be great for you.

Like, Literally.
If you want a literal interpretation of your book, here’s a pack of 52!
