Summer Market Crochet Patterns: Free Fast-Selling Designs

Selling in the summer? Picking up crochet again? What in the world?

I would have said this about myself earlier this year. But in the spring I signed up to work with a handmade collective that goes to markets called Stitched Timber...and what sells in the summer? Mostly crochet stuffies.

My Rules of Thumb for Market Patterns

  1. It has to be a decently fast pattern – if I can’t whip out a few in one night then I toss it and move on
  2. People tend to like small items under $20 – at least if you’re selling in a booth with other handmade items as well. I’m signed up to go to a market in Douglas County in late September where I’ll have all my own booth and I’ll bring some of the crochet lovies I’ve been making to see how they do, but mostly they were a miss at these markets.
  3. Low sew or no sew is the goal – you want speed and lots of ends are not going to help!
  4. To make stuffies that look nice, polyester yarn is key. While Wool Ease and super bulky acrylic yarn is something I’ve used in the past for stuffies, after using the plush yarn I’ll never go back.
  5. ALWAYS check for a coupon before going to Michaels or JoAnn – there’s almost always something that can save you money!

And now for the free patterns…the paid patterns will be in a separate post!

{Disclaimer: I’m not making anything off of naming these patterns, they’re ones that I have found and liked!}

Free Crochet Patterns for Market Prep

Crochet Axolotl – No Sew

by Crochet by Genna

I found Genna at the beginning of all the market prep and she seems to have a good pulse on what’s trending and what will sell! She also wrote this axolotl pattern and provides the tutorial for free, so that’s a win! They take me about half an hour to complete and I’ve sold all of the ones I sent to market thus far.

Leggy Frogs

@kniftylittlething

While I was skeptical of these when I first saw them on market vlogs, but with some trial, error and a few modifications (there was some Frankenstein-ing of patterns) I got a result I’m happy with!

Here is a pattern that’s similar, although the shaping might be something I’ll have to write later.

Mushroom Poppers

Being a fidgety person myself, I shouldn’t have been surprised these sold as well as they did. But hey, they’re fast AND a great stash buster!

Sea Turtles

I added these late summer and immediately sold two – I’m not as in love with the process of making them as they require some prep and weaving in ends but the result is cute! And honestly they’re a good option for a mid-level item.

The mini…
Here’s the bigger one!

Loaf Cats

Last but not least…the loaf cat. These are a result of the Stitched Timber gals letting me know a nearby booth had sold these like CRAZY. I’ve seen a few different patterns, both paid and free, and found this one by StitchedbyFay. I liked that it’s a great base to add all kinds of patterns! I whipped out like 11 in one weekend and am already needing to re-stock.

@kniftylittlething

Which of these is your favorite? Did I miss any that have sold great for you? Let me know in the comments!

Keep stitching,
